Course summary

This course is designed for school staff and it aims to improve knowledge and understanding of approaches and practice from within the Swedish Education system in relation to outdoor learning. The course provides an opportunity yo experience the power of outdoor learning through Swedish approaches to nature-based education. Explore practical ways to use forests and natural environments to develop curiosity, collaboration, resilience and environmental awareness, while integrating sustainability into everyday teaching and learning.

The course looks at how outdoor learning supports the development of a child as a whole and in particular how the use of a forest environment can promote personalised learning, social and emotional skills, cognitive development, and wellbeing to name a few.

The course methodology encourages active participation, sharing of good practice and reflection of approaches used to improve the provision and the quality of education.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Plan outdoor learning activities that connect curriculum objectives with the natural environment.

  • Apply nature-based learning methods to develop curiosity, collaboration, resilience and problem-solving.

  • Integrate environmental awareness and sustainability into everyday teaching.

  • Use local outdoor spaces to support learning across different curriculum areas.

  • Identify strategies for making outdoor learning accessible and engaging for learners with diverse needs.

  • Develop a practical outdoor learning plan suitable for implementation in their own school.

What participants have said about this course

“It has been amazing! It’s the best course I’ve been on - it has been incredibly well organised, and has provided the perfect amount of professional development! I’ve absolutely loved it, especially being in the outdoors for the majority of the trip!”
Croydon, UK

The course was incredible from start to finish, so much better than anything I could imagine and I’ve come away with so much new knowledge.

Wales, UK

It was really great to be fully engaged with the school day and teaching rather than simply touring the schools, so we could appreciate the benefits that forest learning has for both students and teachers alike, and see how it actually works with different parts of the curriculum/age groups.
