Course summary

Designed for teachers of upper primary and lower secondary pupils (roughly ages 9 to 14), in any subject. No technical background needed.

Every text is made by someone, for a reason. News, advertising, social media, political messaging, images and now AI-generated content all construct meaning, and each one is either selling or telling. What a text leaves out can matter as much as what it says.

This course gives teachers a clear, repeatable way of taking texts apart: what they say, who made them and why, what they leave out, and how far they can be trusted. It is designed to be taught to children, starting with simple questions pupils can ask of any image, post or advert from upper primary onwards. Participants practise on real material from around the world, use AI tools to check and cross-reference claims, and test what the tools tell them too. AI is used to help verify, and is itself verified.

The approach works across the curriculum, from English and art to history, geography and PSHE, and participants bring their own classroom contexts into the work throughout.

During the week, the group visits a local school to see how Spanish colleagues are preparing students for a world of persuasion, misinformation and AI-generated content.
